The year is 1184. It has been 18 years since Enechetu was conjured in Wrenefr. The Priests of L'Edsommr have left the survivors to their own devices and returned to their homelands to prepare for the next conclave.

Meanwhile, Too old now. Frail and his bones protrude. His robe keeps the sores on his skin hidden, but they won’t hide the smell. He pokes at the embers and watches the sparks rise. A flame emerges as weak as he is for a moment. Then it brightens and illuminates his stony face, weathered and cold. Some have seen him. Fewer still remember him. Others sing of him from years ago when he first came to Wrenefr. Out of place then and now out of time. The Magus of Wrenefr breathes his last Word into the hearth. None shall mourn him. He is assumed long gone.

Ashes and sparks rise through the chimney and meet the night’s cold breeze. Across the fields. Over the braes. Beyond the two rivers in the valley below. Where the air is warmer. Where the dew has formed on the grasses under the glow of the moon and stars.

A day or so before in Eldresl, Cinaedh, a boy of 14 years is cast out of the village. That night, he is guided by unseen forces to become part of a lineage he had never contemplated and others could never understand.
